Excess Underarm Sweating

Do you struggle with excess underarm sweating? This is a more common problem than you think. Fortunately we can help.

Excess underarm sweating may be hyperhidrosis where there is severe sweating that occurs with minimal or no triggers and can be a significant difficulty in social situations. However, there are many people who have not been diagnosed with hyperhidrosis who suffer with excess underarm sweating as well.

Excess sweating may cause you to changing your shirt regularly, cover up with jackets or sweaters, careful selection of the clothes you wear for fear of the sweat showing or ruining your shirts, placing pads or padding under the arms to absorb the sweat, or simply avoiding situations where your sweat may show – like lifting your arms or stretching. Excess underarm sweating can affect your social life, your work life, and your confidence.

This may lead to use of topical anti-perspirants, prescriptions for medical-grade topical treatments, injections of Botox™ to stop the sweating temporarily for 3 months, or invasive surgery on the glands.

The good news is that we finally have a permanent solution for the problem of underarm sweating. miraDry!

What is miraDry™?

miraDry is the only non-invasive, FDA-cleared and Health Canada approved treatment for the bothersome problem of underarm sweat. miraDry will eliminate the sweat and odor glands, leaving you confident that your underarms stay dry in any situation.

Do I need my armpit sweatglands?

No. You have approximately 2 million sweat glands throughout your body. The underarm region contains only 2% of all the glands. After you have a miraDry treatment, you will have dry underarms but still continue to perspire normally everywhere else.

How does it work?

The miraDry system uses proprietary miraWave energy that targets and destroys sweat and odor glands in the underarm region. Once those glands are destroyed, they do not grow back. Meaning, once they are gone, they are gone for good!

Who can be treated with miraDry?
  • If you have been diagnosed with axillary (underarm) hyperhidrosis.
  • If you are bothered by your underarm sweat.
  • If you have embarrassing underarm sweat outbreaks.
  • If you have to frequently re-apply antiperspirant during the day.
  • If you are frustrated because you are constantly ruining clothes with excess sweating.
What is the miraDry procedure like?

First we will see you in consultation to review everything with you and to discuss any questions you might have.

The procedure itself involves cleansing the underarm skin and applying a properly sized temporary tattoo grid to the skin. We will inject local anaesthesia (freezing) into the underarm to provide more comfort during the procedure. There is little to no pain for most patients.

There are no surgical incisions or cuts.

The miraDry handpiece is then applied multiple times over the underarm while you lay back in a reclined position. The visit lasts about 1-1.5 hours.

What results can I expect?

Lasting results – sweat glands don’t come back after treatment. The results are dramatic and immediate. You can expect 82% average sweat reduction after 2 treatments. Most people will have an over 50% reduction in their sweating after the first treatment alone. However, as with any medical procedure, results will vary from person to person.

Is there downtime?

There is minimal to no downtime. Most patients return to normal activities or work right after the procedure. You can typically resume exercise within several days of the procedure.

What are the side effects?

miraDry has a strong safety record. You may have some local swelling or soreness after the procedure and this can last up to a few weeks. Some patients have short-term altered sensation in the skin of the underarm or upper arms which gradually disappears over the weeks.

We will discuss all these with you during your consultation with us.

How many procedures will I need?

2 procedures are usually done 3 months apart to get the maximal results.

Why would I get miraDry over other treatments?

Other options such as strong topical skin medications or Botox™ injections are temporary and over years, will cost a significant amount. Surgery is invasive and has downtime and usually significant scarring afterwards, while not always clearing all the sweating away.

The miraDry is the only lasting solution with a non-invasive treatment.

What does the treatment cost?

This treatment is not covered by Manitoba Health. Cost is $1500 per treatment or $3000 for the two recommended treatments.
