Almost everyone goes through a period of acne at one point or another in their lifetime. It is common among teenagers and usually begins around 10-13 years old. But acne can affect people into their 30’s and 40’s. It is estimated that 90% of teenagers and 25% of adults experience trouble with acne.
Our skin has hundreds of glands called sebaceous glands. These glands produce an oily substance called sebum. This substance acts as a natural moisturizer and keeps our skin healthy. If one of these glands becomes clogged by skin cells and sebum, a bacterium called p.acne grows inside and causes the gland to swell and it forms a pimple.
Acne can become worse when you experience feelings of stress, anxiety, guilt, or fear. Some women find acne worsens on or just before they menstruate. While not life threatening, acne can leave life-long emotional and physical scars, a reminder of the embarrassment and self consciousness that came along with the pimples.
