Laser Therapy for Hairloss

THE ILLUMIWAVE SOLUTION.

The most common question we answer about the Illumiwave laser treatment for hair loss is: does it work? The answer is yes. While the field of laser treatments for hair loss are still being studied, it is not a new option. Energy in various forms has been shown to stimulate hair follicle growth for years. However, only a few lasers have shown consistent results and have undergone the rigorous requirements of the FDA (Federal Drug Agency of USA) and Health Canada to receive approval for hair rejuvenation. The Illumiwave laser is one of them.

To understand how the laser works, it is important to understand the problem. Hair loss is common in both men and women. There are many causes of hair loss but by far the most common reason is androgenic alopecia or normal hormonal hair loss. This type of hair loss if often genetic and can begin in men as early as their 20s and affects about 50% of men before they are age 50.

HOW DOES THE LASER WORK?

The laser uses 181 true laser diodes at 650nm and 670 nm wavelengths that output low level laser therapy (LLLT) to the scalp. The LLLT has the following effects:

  1. Increased scalp blood flow and microcirculation
  2. Increases nutrient supply to enhance hair growth
  3. Stimulates and accelerates hair growth
  4. Repairs and improves hair shaft quality
  5. Reduces the binding of excess levels of skin 5 alpha reductase and DHT which contribute to genetic thinning
  6. Relieves scalp conditions such as psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, itchy/scaling scalp (anti-inflammatory properties)
  7. Normalizes sebum production (also increases production in under activity and dryness and decreases production in over activity or greasiness)
  8. Reduces tight, tender scalp
What are the results?

99% of all patients will stop their progression on hair loss, meaning you are able to achieve stabilization of hair loss. All of our hair loss treatment patients will also see fuller, thicker, shinier and healthier hair. Patients will notice a 20% increase in thickness alone within the first 3-5 months of treatment. Upwards of 85%of patients will also see hair regrowth of terminal hairs.

HOW OFTEN DO I COME IN?

We sell the treatment as a 1 year package. Over the course of the year, most patients will receive an average of 44 treatments.

The treatment protocol is 2 treatments per week for 12 weeks, then once/week for 8 weeks and then every other week (2/month) for the remainder of the year. Protocols can be changed to a certain degree to fit the patient’s lifestyle. Treatment time is 20 min.

Patient has to wait a minimum of 48 hours in between treatments as to not over treat, but not wait longer than 2 weeks in between treatments for the first year. After the first year is complete, patients come in 1-2/month for maintenance.

IS IT SAFE

The illumiwave laser stimulates cell function. The effect is not thermal as in the case of surgical lasers. These non-surgical therapeutic lasers are certified Class 3A by the FDA. The energy produced by the photons of these lasers is low and does not have a thermal component that can cause injuries to users and/or operators. This low level energy does not alter molecular structures, but STIMULATES the body’s mechanisms to REPAIR AND HEAL itself. This laser can also be used for wound healing and that is why there are no reported side effects.

You should not use the Illumiwave laser if you are pregnant, have active cold sores or skin infections in the treatment area, active skin cancer, or extreme sensitivity to light. People with a history of glaucoma, cataracts or retinal detachment should discuss this with the doctor to determine if treatment is possible.

DOES IT HURT

You will not feel much at all while the laser is running. Some people will feel a mild tingling sensation or a warming sensation, which goes away within 10 min of completing the treatment.

WHEN WILL YOU SEE RESULTS

Most patients will see full stabilization of hair loss within 3 months and hair regrowth can be seen as early as 6 months.

CAN THIS TREATMENT BE USED IN COMBINATION WITH OTHER TREATMENTS?

Yes. Laser hair growth patients can be on oral or topical medications, as well as using certain shampoos/ conditioners meant for hair loss/thinning. In some cases, our doctor may suggest using Propecia or Minoxidil in combination with your treatment.

The excellent effects of LLLT on scalp and hair health make it an excellent addition for pre-operative and post-operative treatment when undergoing Hair Restoration procedures.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR TREATMENT?

As long as there are living follicles in the area to be treated the laser can be effective in stabilizing and rejuvenating the hair. This laser can work on male or female, and any race or skin color. If the follicles are completely dead and the patient is completely bald then unfortunately this laser is not the right treatment for them.
